Lancia Delta Integrale Group A

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION

Generally

The Lancia Delta was first presented to the public at the 1979 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). It was a 5-door compact hatchback designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, competing in the market with vehicles such as the first-generation VW Golf and the Opel Kadett D. The Lancia Delta proved extremely successful and even won the title of "Car of the Year 1980."

Over time, the model was further developed. Initially, more powerful engines were offered (over 100 hp), followed in 1983 by the Delta HF Turbo (over 130 hp), and in 1986 by the Delta HF 4WD, which combined the turbocharged engine with permanent all-wheel drive. Now equipped with a 2-liter (1,995 cc) engine with an intercooler, the Delta HF 4WD boasted 165 hp.

The first Lancia Delta HF Integrale was unveiled at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). Externally, the boxy Lancia Delta was equipped with wider fenders and additional air intakes in the hood. With a modified turbocharger, the engine now produced 185 hp. From 1989, the 16V version with 200 hp was offered, recognizable by its more pronounced hood bulge.

The Integrale's performance was impressive, and so, over the following years, further upgrades were gradually introduced for its fan base. The EVO with 210 hp followed at the end of 1991, and the EVO II with 215 hp in 1993. Until the mid-1990s, numerous limited special editions were also produced, distinguished by their unique configurations and/or paint finishes, such as the Martini, Verde York, and Final Edition.

The Integrale's performance was impressive, and so, over the next few years, further upgrades were introduced for its fan base. The enthusiasm for the Lancia Delta HF Integrale was primarily driven by its great motorsport successes, which accompanied and influenced the development of the production models. After the end of Group B, the Delta S4, with its supercharged and turbocharged mid-engine, became obsolete, necessitating the development of a new competition model. Based on the Delta, Abarth in Turin first modified the Delta 4WD and then the Integrale into competition vehicles. The success was overwhelming; the Delta Integrale dominated rally competitions and became the most successful rally car of all time. From 1987 to 1992, Lancia won all of the World Rally Championship manufacturers' titles. Drivers under contract with the factory team included Makku Alen, Miki Biasion, Juha Kankkunen, Didier Auriol, Bjom Waldegard, and, representing Germany, Roland Holzer.

History

The Lancia Delta Integrale Group A left the Italian factory in 1988 as one of only a few original works rally cars. The vehicle with chassis number ZLA831AB00417994 was registered on 01 June 1988 by Fiat Automobil AG in Heilbronn under the license plate HN H6. The rally car’s original purchase price was 770,000.00 DM.

The car was campaigned in the German and International Rally Championships, driven by Roland Holzer with co-driver Klaus Wendel. Roland Holzer, who had begun his professional rally career with Opel in the 1980s, switched to Lancia in 1987.

With this Lancia Delta Integrale and co-driver Klaus Wendel, he finally achieved his breakthrough in 1989, taking 2nd place overall in the German Rally Championship with a total of four overall wins. In the European Rally Championship he finished 8th overall, including an overall victory at the Int. ADAC Sachs Winter Rally. One year later, with this Lancia Delta Integrale Group A, they clinched the overall title in the German Rally Championship, celebrating five overall victories. In the European Rally Championship they improved again, securing two overall wins and finishing 9th overall. In the World Rally Championship, the team achieved an impressive 10th place at the Rally de Portugal – Vinho do Porto, just 42 seconds behind overall winners Miki Biasion and Tiziano Siviero, the reigning World Rally Champions. Due to its national and international success with Roland Holzer and Klaus Wendel, this Lancia Delta Integrale Group A (HN H6) became a promotional icon for Lancia Germany and appeared in numerous magazines, posters, and advertisements.

Like almost all professionally used rally cars, Roland Holzer and Klaus Wendel unfortunately suffered an accident with the Lancia Delta Integrale in 1991. However, since only the body was damaged, Lancia Germany and the AM Holzer Motorsport team decided to rebuild the car to compete again in the 1992 World Rally Championship. Still owned by Fiat Automobil AG, the Lancia Delta Integrale received EVO II upgrades to keep pace with competition and technological developments in rallying.

The 20th Marlboro San Marino Rally ended prematurely for the team of Josef Sivik and Miroslav Houst after a retirement on special stage 6, despite running near the front. However, their performance was confirmed when Josef Sivik and Miroslav Houst ran solidly in the midfield during the Lombard RAC Rally in Great Britain, a round of the World Championship. Unfortunately, a mistake on the final stage forced Sivik to retire after a minor accident. Nevertheless, he was named best rookie in the Lancia Delta Integrale Group A. After four years of national and international rally competition, the professional career of this Lancia Delta Integrale Group A came to an end at the conclusion of the 1992 season, and the race car remained in the possession of Fiat Automobil AG until 1994.

In 1994 the first change of ownership took place and the Lancia was registered to Grzegorz Adam Mowius in Erkrath. Owned by the passionate rally driver and dentist, the car was used in national rally championships and professionally serviced by Frank Unger’s team. After another four years, the vehicle was sold to Dessau and registered to Rano Polack on 29 April 1998. The new owner, also an enthusiastic rally driver, continued to enter the Lancia in various national events before it was finally deregistered on 30 June 2000. Back at Holzer Motorsport, the Lancia Delta Integrale Group A was serviced and refurbished after its active rally career, bringing it to perfect technical and visual condition.

The vehicle was later sold to another owner in France and then Italy, where it served solely as a collector’s item and received no further entry in the original German registration papers. Through the renowned Lancia specialist KeySport and its professional racing team in Italy, the Lancia Delta Integrale Group A returned to Germany in 2015. The new owner, a well-known Lancia expert and collector from Hanover, purchased the vehicle from KeySport and had it regularly serviced there. This also occurred in February 2020, when the latest change of ownership took place and the car was once again inspected and freshly serviced in Italy before delivery. In recent years, the race car—always eligible for German road registration due to its homologation—was used for show events. Thanks to its originality as a works rally car, it also received historic registration (H-plate) and a new technical and emissions inspection, making it fully legal for both rally events and public road use.

This Lancia Delta Integrale Group A is a piece of German motorsport history and is ready for immediate use. In addition, the Lancia has a valid German road registration and is a valuable asset for any high-level racing or rally event.

Special features

With the successes of this Lancia Delta Integrale Group A, registration number HN-H6, in both the German Rally Championship and the World Rally Championship, Roland Holzer and Klaus Wendel made motorsport history. Even today, Lancia remains the most successful manufacturer in rallying with the Delta Integrale. This Lancia is a piece of Italian and German motorsport history and a highly sought-after guest at any top-class event, serving as a ticket to the most prestigious racing and rally events worldwide. Speculation suggests that the FIA will soon launch a new series for original classic racing cars, which would be an interesting opportunity to put this race-ready car back into action. However, the car could also be used on public roads, primarily for transportation to the next event.
